Tammy Wynette
Tammy Wynette (May 5, 1942 – April 6, 1998) was an American country music singer-songwriter and one of country music's best-known artists and biggest-selling female singers. Wynette was called the "First Lady of Country Music", and her best-known song, "Stand by Your Man", is one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman in the history of country music. Many of her hits dealt with classic themes of loneliness, divorce, and the difficulties of life and relationships.[1]
Wynette released around 30 singles in the UK between the late 1960s and the end of the 1980s.[2] However, she only had three solo hit singles in the UK and they were in 1975 and 1976, scoring a #1 with her first - "Stand By Your Man". Her second hit was the equally memorable "D.I.V.O.R.C.E."[3]. In 1991, she returned the charts with the KLF, providing lead vocals on "Justified and Ancient", which went to #2.[4]
Her first appearance on a budget compilation album in the UK was on K-Tel's 1974 release 20 Town & Country Greats.[5]
